The popularity of traditional shaving techniques has exploded recently as men ditch their disposable cartridges and pick up straight razors in search of a smoother shave. This renaissance of this shaving technique has brought back another good friend – the styptic pencil.
What is a styptic pencil?
A styptic pencil is a type of antihemorrhagic agent that works by contracting tissue to seal injured blood vessels. Styptic pencils have been used for years as a safe and effective way to stop minor cuts from continued bleeding.
The styptic pencil comes in 3 different forms:
1. Chalky Styptic Pencil
2. Styptic Alcohol liquid
3. Glyder’s Styptic Balm
What’s inside the different styptic solutions?
The main ingredient of styptic products is anhydrous aluminum sulphate powder, similar to that found in antiperspirant deodorant.
You may remember your grandfather’s shaving kit containing an alum block – the forefather of the modern styptic pencil. Today styptic pencils are used to disable the blood flow from shaving cuts, and their versatility is prized by the military, veterinary clinics, and more.
When applied, the aluminum sulphate in the styptic pencil causes the blood vessels around the wound to contract, thus stemming the flow of blood.
Here are the ingredient compositions of the 3 different styptic solutions:
1. Chalky Styptic Pencil:
The chalky styptic pencil is a medicated stick made of powdered crystal from an alum block and a wax binder which is pressed into a handy lipstick size and shape.
2. Styptic Alcohol liquid:
Contains SD Alcohol (Ethyl Alcohol), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Water (Aqua), Aluminum Chloride Hexahydrate, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Hydroxypropylcellulose
3. Glyder’s Styptic Balm:
Contains Aluminum, Aloe Vera, Vitamin E, Argan Oil, Jojoba and Tea Tree Oil.
